Bull's Bay Beach
About Bull's Bay Beach
In Jamaica, Hanover is often dubbed the forgotten parish, but it has a few hidden gems worth exploring, especially Bull’s Bay Beach. This beach is located in the community of Bull’s Bay, Hanover. A short distance from the main road, this local beauty is a tranquil spot to soak up some sun, snorkel along the coast or take a quick dip in the clear turquoise waters. This is a public beach which has been a chill-spot for members of the surrounding community – and is the ideal spot for families. Note however, that since the beach is public, it is imperative that patrons bring their own accessories (blankets, mats, chairs etc.), as well as trash bags to collect personal garbage.
While the destination, Bull’s Bay Beach, is the main attraction, there are several gems along the way that make the journey just as amazing. There are several historical landmarks along the drive which bring out the beauty in Jamaica, including the infamous Tryall Water Wheel and Fort Charlotte.
The Tryall Water Wheel was built in the early 1700s and was used to power the rollers which broke down the sugar cane. The wheel is powered by water from the Flint River which runs for a few miles through the property. At the time the waterwheel was installed, the estate was in excess of 3000 acres. Up until 1912, sugar cane was the principal crop cultivated before being replaced by pimento and coconut.
Fort Charlotte also has significant historical value. This fort located in Lucea, Hanover was built sometime during the mid 18th century by the British as a defense base on the North-North Westerly area of the island. Its unique shape gave the British a huge advantage and they could see their enemy approaching from any angle. The fort was named after the then reigning king of England, King George III’s consort, Charlotte.
